When life insurance comes up with families in Morgan Hill, Gilroy and San Jose, a common response is that they are already covered through work. That’s a good start. But in the Bay Area, employer life insurance alone can leave a family with a much bigger gap than expected, and two pieces of news from this year show why.
The News: Millions of Americans Are Still Underinsured
Every year, LIMRA and the nonprofit Life Happens survey thousands of American households for their 2026 Insurance Barometer Study. The latest results, based on a survey of more than 5,000 adults this January, found:
- About 92 million U.S. adults say they need life insurance or need more than they have.
- Only 52% of Americans own any life insurance at all.
- 27% of insured people have workplace coverage only, with no policy of their own.
- 47% of households would feel the financial hit within six months if their main earner died. Only 29% could stay secure for more than two years.
- About 3 in 4 people overestimate the cost of life insurance. Adults under 31 guess a 20-year term policy costs roughly five to six times what it actually does.
That last point matters. Cost is the number one reason people give for not buying coverage, and it’s also the thing most people get wrong.
The Local Angle: Bay Area Layoffs Doubled This Spring
This is where workplace-only coverage gets risky locally. Large employers in California must file layoff notices with the state under the WARN Act (California EDD). According to those filings, as reported by CoStar, employers across the San Francisco, San Jose and East Bay markets announced about 9,390 job cuts in the second quarter of 2026, more than double the 4,290 announced a year earlier. Much of it came from Silicon Valley tech.
Plenty of Morgan Hill families commute up Highway 101 to those same employers. And group life insurance is tied to the job. When the job ends, the coverage usually ends with it, often right when a family can least afford a gap. Getting new coverage later can also cost more, because the applicant will be older and health may have changed.
Do the Math for a Morgan Hill Home
Workplace life insurance is often a flat amount or one to two times salary. Compare that with what it would need to cover here. The median sale price in Morgan Hill over the last six months was about $1.29 million, according to Resideline’s Morgan Hill housing market data, based on 264 local closings.
A simple example:
- Home price: about $1,290,000
- Mortgage after 20% down: about $1,030,000
- Workplace coverage at 2x a $150,000 salary: $300,000
- Gap on the mortgage alone: about $730,000, before childcare, college or replacing years of income
A rule of thumb that works in Ohio doesn’t work in Santa Clara County. Bay Area families simply need more coverage because the costs here are higher.
Five Steps to Take This Week
- Find the real number. Log in to the benefits portal and write down exactly how much life insurance is provided through work. Many people don’t know.
- Add up what the family would need. Mortgage balance, years of income, childcare, college and debts. The post How Much Life Insurance Is Really Needed? walks through it, and Life Happens has a free guide on calculating life insurance needs.
- Treat work coverage as a bonus, not the plan. An individual policy stays in place through a job change, a layoff or the start of a new business. For most families, term life is the recommended choice; see Term Life vs. Whole Life: A Practical Comparison.
- Before leaving a job, ask about conversion or portability. Many group plans allow some coverage to continue after leaving, but there’s usually a short deadline to apply. Ask HR before the last day.
- Get a real quote from a strong company. For most healthy people, term life costs much less than expected. Choose a long-standing, highly rated insurer; Beyond the Bailout explains why.

The Bottom Line
Workplace life insurance is a nice perk, but it belongs to the employer. In a region with million-dollar mortgages and a job market that can turn quickly, a family’s protection should belong to the family.
